Last Saturday night July 16 was a big night in Hope, Arkansas and a big night for Texarkana as The Miss Southwest/Ouachita River Scholarship Competitions took place at Hempstead Hall on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Hope-Texarkana. And those two titles went to two women from Texarkana.
Watching Arkansas' Miss America preliminary pageant -- which started with an arrival celebration June 11 in Little Rock -- one name kept popping up. Ebony Mitchell, competing as Miss Dogwood, won the preliminary evening gown competition, the preliminary on-stage interview competition and the preliminary talent competition with her tap dance to "Respect."
Congratulations to Ebony Mitchell, a 25-year-old graduate student from Harrison. She won the title of Miss Arkansas 2022 over the weekend.
First the first time in pageant's 84-year history, both winners crowned are women of color.
Ebony Mitchell has sought the Miss Arkansas crown since her childhood.
