A vicious network of gold smuggling has over taken the region following the Russia-aided military coup in 2021 

A sit-in against toxic and harmful mining practices in River Nile state has entered its second week. The sit-in reportedly succeeded in halting all mining operations in the area, including those of a Russian-owned gold mining company. Local authorities made some pledges to the protesters.

Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese took to the streets in Khartoum and other states yesterday in the January 6 Marches of the Millions, called for by the resistance committees active in many neighbourhoods in Sudan. At least three protesters were reportedly killed in Khartoum.

Hospital managers in Khartoum have warned of an imminent collapse in the provision of health services, as Health Ministry support has dwindled since the October 25 coup. Concerns over the spread of COVID-19 has prompted White Nile state to close all educational facilities until mid-December. River Nile state has registered 10 deaths and 22 cases of COVID-19 within five days.

Dozens of people, including lawyers, politicians, government officials and professionals have been arbitrarily detained, and some allegedly tortured, and an ongoing campaign against revolutionaries across Sudan by army and militia forces since the military coup seized power on October 25.
