The unemployment rate remains steady at a revised 3.5 per cent after 14,600 jobs were lost in the month of December.
Abares Executive Director Dr Jared Greenville says the weather Australia has seen lately gave “ideal growing conditions” despite flooding. “Out of the west and Western Australia, they’ve had close to ideal growing conditions this year and set to hit the record winter crop, that’s going to float through to South Australia which is also hitting records,” Dr Greenville told Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd. “Those two states are really carrying the difference that we’re seeing in New South Wales and helping us contribute to that total.”
Australia’s economic growth numbers for the September quarter will be released on Wednesday with GDP expected to grow 0.6 per cent. Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd says it’s a “little bit less” than the previous quarter. “But when you look at it on an annualised basis comparing it to the September quarter in 2021 which was a negative quarter of growth, the economy’s tipped to grow by 6.2 per cent over the course of a year,” Mr Boyd said.
