You know tales of nuns taking a ruler to the knuckles of wayward students? Barbara Mohler learned a thing or two from growing up in a classroom like that in Fort Lauderdale. She never got smacked, said the public and private school educator retiring after 39 years at St. Edward’s — the past 14 as head of the lower school. Some of her friends did. It made such an impression she never considered such punishment in her five years teaching public elementary school in Miramar, two years at Gifford Middle Seven or almost four decades at St. Ed’s in Vero Beach.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An 18-year-old private school student died after he was pulled from the Indian River Lagoon and taken to a hospital Friday evening. Officials said Beniske Termador died in a "tragic accident" after he jumped off a dock into water roughly 10 feet deep shortly before 3 p.m. at St. Edward's School, according to Indian River County Sheriff's Office. The school is off Highway A1A south of Beachland Boulevard. New Windsor Supervisor George Meyers said Friday that the school already had reopened and was serving about 120 boys in grades 6-9 from the Kiryas Joel area in 12 classrooms.  The brick school was built in 1966 and had undergone "many recent upgrades," according to its real estate listing. The Archdiocese had closed St. Joseph and three other Orange County schools in 2011 because of falling enrollment.
