The department of correctional services says there have been fewer escapes from South African prisons in the year between April 2022 and March 2023 than there were in previous year, the period April 2020 to March 2021
Briefing Parliament on its annual report on Thursday, the Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons (JICS) noted that the year in review also recorded the highest number of remand detainees ever in the past decade.
