Awakening reflects the wondrous transition from the stasis of winter to the rebirth of spring. Humanity experienced a heightened sense of stasis during this past winter, where our daily lives became quite fixed and unchanging, almost suspended in time… We held our breath and waited. This work evokes the sense of transformation and unveiling using dense layered textures to convey the vast expanse of the natural world; the opening up and revealing of new growth, the springing forth of new life. Darkness emerging into light.

On Wednesday, March 10, Eighth Blackbird, a four-time Grammy Award-winning Chicago-based music ensemble, will showcase sax player and composer Nick Zoulek in a livestream concert at 7 p.m. CT.
This concert is part of the Eighth Blackbird s Chicago Artists Workshop livestream concert series.
Zoulek s performance will feature solo performance of his compositions with collaborative films from his debut 2016 album, Rushing Past Willow, plus new works from his upcoming project, Enter Branch. Composer Nina Shekhar Receives The ASCAP Foundation Nissim Prize
Paul Williams, President of The ASCAP Foundation, announces that Nina Shekhar has been named the recipient of the 41st annual ASCAP Foundation Rudolf Nissim Prize. Selected by a panel of conductors, Shekhar was honored for Lumina, a c. 11-minute work for orchestra, and awarded a prize of $5,000.
Dr. Rudolf Nissim, former head of ASCAP s International Department and a devoted friend of contemporary composers, established this annual prize through a bequest to The ASCAP Foundation. The Prize is presented annually to an ASCAP concert composer for a work requiring a conductor that has not been performed professionally. A jury of three conductors selects the winning score.
