In the last few years the label “world class universities” (WCU) has made frequent, sometimes dissonant, appearances in public, state and academic discussions, and often employed synonymously with “research universities” or “global research universities” (a coinage that emerged post-2005, from research conducted by the Fulbright New Century Scholars Programme). The “global university” tag is being used liberally across higher education institutions (HEIs) in India too now. The tag is more than just that. It flags several important aspects of a changing HEI system. And yet, the contradictions within this WCU category and what it entails are glaring.

Measure what matters: Ranking universities in the age of pandemic
Universities are caught in the cross fire of the pandemic. While the value of their research has never been more evident, the quality of online learning is questioned. How will university rankings respond? 
These are the best of times and worst of times for universities. On one hand, their researchers have been lionised for rapid vaccine development. On the other hand, many students are unhappy with campus lock-downs and online teaching. So, when the COVID-19 dust settles, what marks will each university get?  
That depends partly on how university ranking systems end up weighing all this turmoil – and, while nobody knows the answer yet, how these self-appointed university graders manage the challenge will also affect their own future. For years, a small group of private ranking organisations from Shanghai to New York has compiled and published data on university performance. They have been often criticised – most often by universities that didn’t place highly. But they are never ignored, by the university administrators themselves or by prospective funders, students or faculty.

What is the role of universities in global upskilling?
Wide-scale investment in upskilling has the potential to boost global gross domestic product (GDP) by US$6.5 trillion by 2030 and lead to the creation of 5.3 million net new jobs globally by 2030, according to a new report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on 21 January.
Upskilling for Shared Prosperity, prepared in collaboration with PwC, is a call to action. It makes the economic case for providing employees with learning and development opportunities to expand their horizons while minimising skills gaps and makes sweeping generalisations while presenting country- and region-specific information that indicates that there are great differences between these.
