After months of a relative static siege, Russian forces launched a heavy assault in the direction of the front-line town of Avdiivka, backed up by armor, artillery, and air strikes. The Ukrainian military has reported unusually heavy fighting over the past three days as Russia encroaches on the mostly destroyed town and along its flanks. Avdiivka has stood on the front lines since the very start of Russia's war in 2014.

According to Illia Yevlash, the spokesperson for the Eastern Grouping of Forces, Russian troops shifted the focus of their efforts against a new target – Makiivka, a Luhansk Oblast village roughly 30 kilometers north of Lyman and 60 kilometers south of Kupiansk.

Russian troops hit the village of Makiivka in Luhansk Oblast on Sept. 12, killing an elderly man, the Interior Ministry reported on Telegram. On the same evening, Russia struck the settlements of Sadove and Poniativka in Kherson Oblast, injuring three people, the regional administration wrote.

Twenty-nine-year-old assault company commander Bohdan knows what’s at stake when he makes decisions on the battlefield. “I'm very afraid of making a mistake, because a mistake costs someone's life,” says Bohdan. Nearly three months into the counteroffensive, the 35th, along with other units deployed nearby, has crawled southward – approximately 10 kilometers – on the Velyka Novosilka axis in Donetsk Oblast.
