The Ministry for the Environment says it is unclear whether Rio Tinto is under any legal obligation to remediate the site of its smelter at Tiwai Point after it closes. Tonnes of a hazardous substance sitting in a Mataura warehouse will be moved to the New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited (NZAS) site at Tiwai Point where it will be stored in containers.
