To them for all the reasons you talked about. repeated stress. being in the water. possibly becoming delam nated. the glue. it s the glue, the epoxy that holds it together. that gets into trouble and they are looking very hard at that in their own observation of it from afar. i m sure investigators will look at all of that as they put this together. tom foreman, appreciate it. thank you. up next, the former commander of the u.s. submarine fleet on the network of sensors that apparently detected the sound of titan imploding. plus, the sinking of a fishing troller in the mediterranean packed with migrants causes hundreds of lives to be lost. ....

Back in port in the hours ahead overnight. earlier we spoke with the submersible expert who tried to flag stockton rush in 2019 about what he believed was a potentially dangerous flaw in the titan. that was a different version of the titan than the one that was now used. he said there were warning signs. joining me now is rachel lance who we talked to earlier in the today. an assistant professor at duke university. she s also a biomedical engineer and has said that the vessel s design materials were already known as a large red flag to people. rachel, i appreciate you being back with us. can you talk about the concerns you had about titan particularly what it was made of not just the carbon but the epoxy between the layers and the attempt to go down to the titanic in a vehicle like this? yes. of course. so there were two red flags that i had when i first looked at the design of this vessel. and the first one is exactly ....

Way. two key questions. one, was it thick enough? there s some about five inches thick. if it s not thick enough, carbon fiber has a problem. carbon fiber is about ten times stronger than steel, but when it reaches its breaking point, it doesn t bend like some other things, it shatters and goes to pieces. the other question is the shelf life of it. this was interesting. he said the problem is not the carbon fiber itself, but it is the resin or the epoxy, the glue that holds it altogether. that can reach a point where it is no longer what it ought to be. and if that is the case, then there is weakness. then it can delaminate as they describe it. presumably though questions about shelf life, thickness, et cetera, are not things that just arose in the last 24 hours. no. were these things that the designer would have been aware of in the process? ....

I talked to james cameron about this a lot last night and how it reacts in salt water and the repeated use. why is that such an issue? it s such an issue because it affects the overall strength of material. so, that repeated use and the delime nation that occurs in salt water is why it is able to pass the pressure test once but ultimately failed. salt water causes galvanic currents to occur. the salt in the water facilitates the movement of electrons. and the blue, the epoxy, between the layers of carbon layers starts to break down in the face of it. this tends to happen anywhere carbon fiber edges are exposed or anywhere it meets another surface because that encourages those currents to occur. but more importantly, this is a known effect. this has been studied and published about for a long time. and people do use things like carbon fiber and fiber glass in pressure vessels. ....

Fitted. there was all kinds of ways to get in trouble. rachel, i want to ask you about those concerns. you have studied sub disasters. you just heard those details in veronica s report about that pressure hull made of carbon fiber. what views are you looking at that could explain this catastrophic implosion? i couldn t agree more with the expert about carbon fiber. sometimes innovation is used as a buzzword, but really what i think has happened in this case is the submarine industry has tried certain things and already rejected them. one of those things is carbon fiber and other similar materials, which are made by lamination. so what that means is these advanced materials are made by repeating and alternating the material itself with layers of epoxy, and that tends to work extremely well to create strength if you re going to build something like an airplane that will then be in the air. ....
