Investigators say someone took over a computer that controls the city of Oldsmar’s water system and tried to poison the water supply. The FBI, Secret Service and Pinellas deputies are now looking into the case.
Hackers broke into the computer system of a facility that treats water for about 15,000 people near Tampa, Florida, and sought to add a dangerous level of additive to the water supply, the Pinellas County Sheriff said on Monday.
Officials from Pinellas county have claimed that hackers accessed their water treatment facilities in an attempt to poison a town's residents.
The hacker allegedly tried to change the sodium hydroxide in the water supply from about 100 parts per million to 11,100 parts per million.
A hacker breached a water treatment facility Friday in Oldsmar, Fla., and increased the sodium hydroxide levels by more than 100 fold, according to police.
