Guns have been confiscated from students on four different occasions this school year at Grand Rapids Public Schools.
The child brought the gun to Cesar Chavez Elementary School May 3.
Public school district officials in Grand Rapids, Mich., say they have banned students from wearing backpacks following the fourth confiscation of a firearm so far this school year.
“The backpack ban is not ideal but, at the end of the day, they have to do whatever it takes to get the guns out of the schools,” Tim Russ, a union representative, said.
The district says this was the fourth time a student has brought a handgun to school this school year.
