Norton Sound Health Corporation has confirmed community spread is happening in St. Michael. NSHC originally said late last night two new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the region, but in fact only one was found. When asked why a case was reported that wasn’t actually confirmed, NSHC spokesperson Reba Lean said it was a miscommunication. “One case was re-communicated to PR even though it had already been reported.” According to the regional health corporation, community leaders in White Mountain are limiting school hours and temporarily suspending their local elder lunch prog...

NSHC says the State Section of Epidemiology and Public Health Nursing will further investigate the newest cases. As of this afternoon, there were 313 total cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Norton Sound since the pandemic began. Five are currently active with three located in Nome and two in St. Michael. 308 are considered recovered. The latest update of NSHC’s COVID data dashboard also showed another individual from the region had been hospitalized bringing the total to six. Another Nome resident and a healthcare employee have tested positive for COVID-19. Norton Sound Health Corporation announced the newest case earlier today and the other was identified on Tuesday. According to NSHC, the latest individual to contract the virus is one of their employees in Nome. The resident tested positive through routine COVID-19 testing and apparently had minimal exposure to other patients.
