French Digital Minister says that EU lawmakers may have to meet again to define details on crucial AI rules after deal
One of the biggest bones of contention is foundation models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which are AI systems that are trained on large sets of data, with the ability to learn from new data to perform a variety of tasks.
The draft AI rules have to be agreed by the European Parliament and European Union member states. They have so far been discussed three times in trilogues, which are meetings between parliament and EU states to thrash out the final versions of laws.
Biometric surveillance and copyrighted material used by ChatGPT and other generative AI are the issues of concern as lawmakers want a ban on such use but EU countries led by France are seeking exceptions for national security, defence and military purposes
After two years of negotiations, the bill is now expected to move to the next stage of the process.
