Two groups of lawmakers at EU ratify provisional agreement on AI rules ahead of vote by legislative assembly
Europe News: BRUSSELS: Europe on Friday moved a step closer to adopting rules governing the use of artificial intelligence and AI models such as Microsoft-backed C.
The main issue is that the first draft of the law was written in early 2021, almost two years before the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, one of the fastest-growing software applications in history. Lawmakers have scrambled to write regulations even as companies like Microsoft-based OpenAI continue to discover new uses for their technology.
Europe's hopes of rolling out the first-of-its-kind rules could be derailed by disagreements over whether AI can be used in biometric surveillance and over the use of AI systems such as foundation models exemplified by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
If agreed, the EU's first-of-a-kind AI Act, which was proposed by the European Commission two years ago, could serve as the benchmark for countries seeking an alternative to the United States' light-touch approach and China's interim rules.
