South Korea: Promote Human Rights in North Korea


300 civil society groups, and 7 concerned individuals, expressed concern about the South Korean government’s increasingly weak stance on human rights violations and accountability in North Korea.
“President Moon Jae-in and his government should be maintaining a strong and principled approach toward North Korea’s grave human rights abuses for the sake of all Koreans,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “President Moon should be addressing North Korea’s lack of cooperation with the United Nations system and recommitting to raising human rights issues in future negotiations.”

SEOUL For years, activist groups in South Korea have sent everything from Bibles to K-pop across the border to the North. Now that could cost them up to three years in prison and a $27,000 fine.
Late Monday, South Korea banned sending material across the border that was critical of the North Korean regime without permission from the Seoul government.
The new law, backed by the ruling party of President Moon Jae-in, drew criticism from North Korean defectors and human rights groups, who accused the government of limiting free speech and undermining democratic values in an effort to improve relations with Pyongyang. ....
