The Budget must scale down the 19-odd rates, and many of the exemptions must be withdrawn
Since the introduction of the GST more than three years ago, Budget-making for indirect taxes has got limited to mainly Customs duties since changes in the rates of the Goods and Services Tax can only be done by the GST Council. Even so, in the last three years, no significant rationalisation has been done by the Finance Ministry in the Budgets. The rates are still far too diverse.
The officers had all the time to achieve a meaningful improvement in the Customs tariff. The Customs tariff has got 19 rates of duty ranging from nil to 150 per cent and some specific duties. ....

KP CM orders probe into Excise-Motorway police scuffle

NOWSHERA: Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on Sunday took serious notice of the scuffle between the Excise and Narcotics Squad and Motorway Police personnel a day before and ordered a probe into the incidence.
The scuffle had taken place between the officials of the Excise and Narcotics Squad and the Motorway Police at Soryakhel area on Saturday on the GT Road over the checking vehicles.
The Motorway Police officials had alleged that the Excise and Narcotics Squad officials had snatched their collection vehicle which had Rs150,000 cash.
They had alleged that the Excise and Narcotics Squad officials thrashed their senior patrolling officer and aimed guns at him. ....
