In response to a petition by satirist and comedian Kunal Kamra, the Union government has promised on affidavit to not constitute such a fact-check unit, that would have the powers to call for pulling down of information that the government deems to be not factual.
The Centre has told the Bombay High Court on Thursday that the Fact Checking Unit (FCU) will not be notified until July 5.
The fact check unit may only identify fake or false or misleading information and not any opinion, satire or artistic impression.
