Reid and new york magazine writer rebecca traister and robert traynham. also joining me is executive director of family values at work, ellen bravo. very great to be here. thanks. i offered a few examples there of kind of improvement in family leave policies. but overall, how would you characterize the current state of family leave in america? any way you slice it, it s a disgrace. if you look at that chart that shows the number of weeks paid leave nations offer, we re at zero. only one other country in the world like that category. if you look at private sector employees who get paid leave from their employer, 13%. and here s the real shocker. we did a press conference recently with cheryl lerner and a new report shows one in four women go back to work before two weeks. with disastrous results for them, for their babies and it s because most of them don t get a ....
That is his power, and it s not clear to me what they would like him to do. one thing is the white house talks about all the time is their view is, you know, they re going to have more influence each day in the white house. the moment you step out of the white house, you don t have a lot of authority left. the president wants to use these last 2 1/2 years to do whatever he can to move the ball on things, even if they re not going to pass in congress to get a few things done. that s what that summit monday was about. the sort of working families summit. he wants to use that as a way. he can t pass much to change how working families operate. he can use the podium of the white house to maybe persuade companies to change their family leave policies. that s what they re trying to do. use this power each day. the republicans can see we thought initially this year of action obama talked about would be kind of a waste of time. it was hard to see how he would accomplish things. i would say t ....
Relaxing, and we bring that stress and that anxiety with us. i want to get a sense of what other countries around the world are doing. it seems like they ve been able to manage this work-life balance much better than we have been able to do. help us understand what they are doing right and what we are doing wrong. there are a couple of things. there was a moment back in the early 1970s when women entered the workplace really around the world for two different reasons. the women s movement had opened up possibilities for women, and the economy started to stagnate and costs continued to rise. for working class families, women had to go into the workplace in order to keep the same standard of living. as women started entering the workplace, different countries began looking at the phenomenon and figuring out how do we support this? how do we get good work out of people and, yet, recognize that, you know, to continue society, you need family. they came up with pay family leave policies. ....
I mean, that was just shameful. let s just start there obviously. as i was listening to that, if the republican peat and conservatives are going to be pro marriage, how about pro marriage equality for everyone. it s not just that they re about marriage. it s women marrying men. how about supporting, i don t know, policies like equal pay or paid medical leave, family leave policies that would actually help keep families strong and help women be good moms and be partners in their families? nicole, you actually worked on republican campaigns trying to appeal to all voters, including women. someone who else has done that, katie packer gauge gave us this statement where she said, the words that she had heard, the word seem to convey an antiquated view that does not represent the realities that many women in america face today. as a con b serve tif republican woman, i am disappointed when i see other conservative women showing a lack of sensitivity to that fact. ....
