ECNEC approves Rs32b plan to fight locusts

The government on Thursday approved 13 mega projects costing Rs322 billion, including Rs32 billion plan to fight locusts despite serious questions over the viability of the scheme.
Headed by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved the mega development projects.
“The Locust Emergency and Food Security Project (LEAFS) that probably needed time before arriving at a decision was approved in about one minute,” said a source in the Planning Ministry. ....

ISLAMABAD: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Thursday approved Rs322.44 billion worth of 13 major development projects to be executed over the next few years.
A meeting of Ecnec, presided over by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, approved Rs13.260bn worth of World Bank-funded human capital investment projects (health sector) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to improve availability, utilisation and quality of primary healthcare facilities in four districts of the province.
The projects would cover a local population of about 8.4 million, besides 500,000 refugees. ....

ISLAMABAD: The 10-party opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on Monday formally nominated Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) as its candidate for the office of the Senate chairman, but deferred its nominations for the offices of deputy chairman and the opposition leader.
Mr Gilani, who caused a major upset by defeating Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the March 3 Senate poll on a general seat from Islamabad, will face incumbent Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, who has already been nominated as the candidate of the ruling alliance headed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), in the election for the top Senate office for which polling will be held on March 12. ....

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said government senators are being approached to gain their support for the opposition’s candidate in the upcoming election for Senate chairman.
On the other hand, ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has so far not announced its candidate for the office of deputy chairman, keeping the slot open and placing itself in a better bargaining position to ensure support of its allies and independent candidates.
Presiding over a meeting of his spokespersons, the prime minister vowed to win the chairman’s post despite opposition’s majority in the upper house. ....
