ATHOL — The town of Athol is among Massachusetts communities that were recently awarded grant monies to assist local businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The grants were awarded under the state’s Local Rapid Recovery Planning program overseen by the Department of Housing and Community Development. Statewide, 125 communities were awarded a total of $9.5 million, with Athol’s slice of the pie amounting to $60,000.
Planning and Development Director Eric Smith said the $60,000 awarded to Athol will be used to bolster businesses in downtown Athol.
“Essentially,” said Smith, “this program is designed to help communities develop what they’re calling ‘rapid recovery’ plans for downtowns and commercial districts post-COVID. Obviously, we’re focusing on downtown Athol under this grant.”

ATHOL — Meagen Donoghue of the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission (MRPS) recently updated the Downtown Vitality Committee on the start of a review of current zoning regulations affecting downtown Athol.
“The Downtown,” Athol Planning and Development Director Eric Smith said, “for some reason, key parts of it are two zoning districts: central commercial and general commercial. Everything from Island Street — the YMCA and that area — down toward Exchange is all part of central commercial, and everything that kind of wraps around that is general commercial. And there are significant differences. One of those is that parking requirement inside of central commercial are waived — outside of that you have to meet all the requirements, and the only way to get a waiver would be a variance. So those are the kinds of things that need to be looked at.”

GREENFIELD — It appears the city is back to where it began several years ago when it comes to deciding what should be done with an historic landmark — the First National Bank building on Bank Row.
The Greenfield Redevelopment Authority, Friends of First National Bank and MassDevelopment have been working together to find an answer to how feasible it would be to redevelop the long-dormant bank building, after finishing a study on the topic. Peg Barringer, director of economic development consulting and a partner of FinePoint Associates in eastern Massachusetts, presented the results Wednesday night.
