From the main highway. david culver is right by the volcano. david, how is the island preparing for the approaching lava? >> reporter: there's a lot of interest and we've seen all sorts of elements moving in, massive rain clouds. you can see over my shoulder here, this is the most active. this is fissure 3. you can see some of the faint looks like lines going straight up from the earth to the sky and it has attracted people all day. the nighttime glow of mauna loa's oozing lava, you have to pull over and properly admire it. it's basically the middle of the night and you guys are out here. why?...
