LAHORE: Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) opposed the Punjab government sugar ex-mill and retail price fixation decision of Rs80 and 85 per kilogram, respectively and termed that this stopgap measure of ‘fixing price’ can at best provide temporary relief to cap the excessive price increase.
However, this measure fails to benefit the sector or the economy at large. The short-term benefit of fixing prices (if any) does not justify the long-term loss caused by such policies, the CCP stated in a policy note ‘fixing of maximum retail price of sugar by government of Punjab’.
The policy note has been issued in the context of a circular issued by the government of Punjab for fixing of the maximum retail price of sugar at Rs85 per kilogram. The CCP compelled by its mandate deemed it necessary to caution and explain the unintended consequences of putting a price ceiling. ....

LAHORE:Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has directed for ensuring provision of sugar at a fixed rate in the province and directed for taking necessary steps in this regard.
Chairing a meeting to review the situation of sugar stocks, rate and availability in the markets, the CM directed the ministers to monitor the sugar situation while visiting divisional headquarters and districts, adding steps be initiated for provision of sugar from sugar mills at a fixed rate.
The stocks of those failing to sell sugar at fixed rate will be taken into custody for auction, he added and directed for expediting action against those selling sugar at an exorbitant rate. The CM made it clear that the government wants to give relief to the poor strata and added that registration of FIRs, arrests and fines be imposed on profiteers. ....

LAHORE : The district administration has fixed the retail price of sugar at Rs 85 per kg across the City.
Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muddassir Riaz Malik on Saturday issued a notification in this regard and directed all the price control magistrates to visit their respective areas and ensured strict implementation on the officially-fixed sugar price.
If any shopkeeper is found overcharging for sugar, heavy fine shall be imposed , he instructed the officers.
The DC himself remained in field and checked various grocery stores. He also inquired from the public about the availability of sugar. ....
