The sailor’s name will be released Wednesday, in accordance with a Navy policy that requires identities to be withheld for 24 hours following next-of-kin notifications.
While additional details were not yet available, spokespersons with the Naval Air Force Atlantic and the Fifth District Coast Guard Affairs confirmed the hard landing at the joint expeditionary base.
Rear Adm. John Meier, commander of Naval Air Force Atlantic, told reporters, "If I knew then what I know today, I think we would have clearly delayed crew move aboard."
