Workers at Ventra's plant in central Michigan voted down a UAW backed contract by 95 percent and are pressing to strike.

The UAW has been compelled to call a strike vote, but it will be held either July 6 or 7, an entire week after the expiration of the current deal.

The accident is not the product of individual error but of an unsafe environment which has persisted for years at the auto parts maker, the product of continuous speedup and long working hours that are common throughout the industry.
