Hey, we see Foam Loss all the time. And it never did any damage to the vehicle. We dont have to worry about it, its only foam. Two missions before columbia it happened on sts112 atlantis. A significant strike hit the skirt of the solid Rocket Booster and actually put a dent in it. Prior till the launch of columbia, and a couple of the meetings, the topic of foam coming off 112 came up. Theres probably, erm. 15 to 20 people around the table and then theres a lot of other people at nasa in the room. We talked about starting to look into this a little bit more because weve seen it come off on, you know, more than one flight now. We should understand if theres a way to prevent it ....

I wasnt sure what to think about it. Im not a rocket scientist, so i called to somebody who i know knew very well at nasa. I said, help me understand how worried i should be for this. And he said, oh, its foam. Its very light material. Probably doesnt cause any damage. But it nagged me the whole mission. Colonel ramon, um, im curious, was the launch what you expected . I was thinking about the foam. I just didnt know how to, in a fiveminute interview, set that up. Are all these experiments working . They couldnt all be working as planned ....

Once these Propulsion Cracks were fixed and repaired, we can resume flight. But i had oversight into all the missions, and there were numerous problems. Well, the other Shuttle Fleet they were just one after another. It just wouldnt end, the damages and things that were out of whack. The tiles were being damaged every flight. One time, a large piece of foam from the gigantic Fuel Tank dented the Solid Rocket Boosters on liftoff. Another time, a Vulture Hit the tank. If it hit the windows, catastrophe. This is a complex vehicle that always needs a lot of caretaking. Every single mission that i was there for ....

One day during the mission, i was reviewing the notes, and then heres this foam issue. During launch, a large piece of foam had come off the external tank and impacted the left wing. Me and my colleague had this discussion of, hey, you can use a Family Conference to talk to laurel and find out what she knew. Oh you got to remember the hat youre wearing is your flightsurgeon hat, not your family hat. It would have broken protocol for me to bring up an issue to a crew member, even though its my wife. I remember a certain sense of relief like, its almost over ....

The second day of the mission was just an ordinary day for me. I was ready to go home about 5 00 on a friday evening. [ Telephone Ringing ]. And then i got a call from my manager. She said, rodney, do you know that a large piece of foam hit the left wing . And i think i gasp and i said ooh or ahh. I made some exclamation. No, i did not hear that. And she said, they have just released a video. Every time i watched the video, im looking at portions of the video or a sector of it, just to see if i can glean one more piece of detail out of it. And the question i had, what is that cloud of expanding white stuff . One Cant Help but ask, is that part of the wing coming apart ....
