The level of planting depends on the number of applications from eligible farmers and landowners. The Department of Agriculture has said in response to EPA's suggestion that between 25,000 and 35,000ha per year may need to be planted for Ireland to reach its net-zero targets.
An area of 65ha has been planted in the first six weeks of 2024, according to the latest afforestation figures from the DAFM.
