Debt-ceiling standoffs and "growing weaponization" could undermine the currency, Benn Steil has warned.
"The recent decline and volatility in the Chinese Yuan, the Russian Ruble, and to a lesser extent the Argentine Peso, will only add further challenges to the idea of de-dollarization," an analyst told Insider.
The John Hopkins University professor echoed Argentina's presidential candidate, who also called for ditching the peso to rein in inflation.
"If tinpot dictators want to wage war, get sanctioned and then need alternate payment means, that's signals Dollar dominance, not weakness..." Robin Brooks said.
The dollar has weakened through much of 2023 amid falling expectations for further US interest-rate increases. It could extend its slide toward lows last seen in late 2020, according to Societe Generale.
