New work is planned at two long-term care homes in Cape Breton as part of a new multi-year plan announced by the province today. The province says the R.C. MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney and the Foyer Pere Fiset in Cheticamp have been chosen for immediate work based on their overall condition and best practices in infection prevention and control. The new plan announced today will also add 236 beds in the Central Zone, including 44 at Northwood in Halifax. The province says the other 192 beds will be determined through the tender process. The Long-Term Care Infrastructure Plan also increases the annual budget for capital repairs and equipment upgrades available to all facilities. ....
-Foyer Pere Fiset, Chéticamp McNeil says the projects are to meet the requirements of that report. “Through the lens of infection prevention, controls within those facilities, they will require, in some cases, either complete replacements or major renovations to meet the current standard.” McNeil says the details will have to be worked out going forward. He says each site will require a different approach. “We’ll look at whether or not the large renovation or extension would suffice, or whether or not it will cost almost as much as replacing the building.” McNeil says they expect the first projects to be completed by 2024-25. ....
