A Dallas developer recently purchased the parkland and plans to turn it into a luxury gated community. Saturday’s vote would instead direct the state to take over the park by eminent domain.
With only three days left on the state’s lease, the agency unanimously voted to condemn almost 5,000 acres in Freestone County in an effort to keep the park open to the public after developers purchased the property to build a gated community.

The commissioners all agreed that though the decision to use eminent domain was unanimous, it didn’t come lightly.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department voted unanimously to use eminent domain to seize a 5,000-acre property south of Dallas.
Condemning the park's property will allow the state to gain control of it and preempt developers from building a gated residential neighborhood.
