3 occupants escape, 2 dogs killed in fire on Elm Street in Galesburg, IL

Man injured, two dogs dead following Elm St structure fire

One man was injured and two dogs were pronounced deceased following a house fire over the weekend. According to a release from the city, 11 fire personnel on duty from all three stations responded to 99 Elm Street for a report of a structure fire at around 5:13 on Saturday morning. Before the fire crews arrived on the scene, the three occupants of the residence were able to self-rescue through the front of the home with one resident stating she smelled something burning before encountering the fire while exiting the bedroom. They were able to rescue one of the three dogs inside the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire with Battalion Chief Dondlad Brackett establishing command and the Brooks Street Station crew using a line to attack the largest portion of the fire at the rear of the structure. Crews were on the scene for several hours putting the fire out. Galesburg firefighters battle Home Blvd apartment blaze

December 17, 2020 The cause of an apartment fire was determined to be accidental by Galesburg Fire Department Investigators. According to a release from the city, firefighters arrived at 668 Home Boulevard at around 1:03 Wednesday afternoon for the structure fire. Fremont Street Station fire personnel were first on scene and reported smoke showing from the first floor of the three-story apartment complex. No one was reported to be in the apartment and Acting Battalion Chief Brock Schmitt assumed command with the Fremont Station fire crew pulling an attack line, gaining entry, and quickly extinguishing the fire. To provide emergency coverage for the city, an emergency callback was initiated of the preceding shift.
