To shoot into crowds of people. that is a shocking statement. in a lot of these cases, the shooters are 14, 15, 16 years old. and that s the sad part about it. i listened to the two gentlemen here from chicago, alderman lopez and pete, and they are both absolutely right. but there are young people who, unfortunately, are attracted to these gangs by what the gangs offer them. the gangs seem to embrace them and bring them together. but what is needed, from a law enforcement standpoint, i believe, is for law enforcement officers to flood the zone of these various neighborhoods. i think they need to have some incentive programs where they bring law enforcement entities neighborhoods where they can live among these gang members. one of the things that has to happen, martha, is these gang ....
What happens if there is combat at hamid karzai airport? what happens then? those are things that clearly the white house hasn t thought through where they are not at least letting us know what those answers might be. sandra: and biden will apparently get another briefing from his national security team a bit later on today. trace, great to be with you on this friday afternoon. thanks to everyone for joining us. i m sandra smith. trace: i m trace gallagher in for john roberts. the story begins with martha maccallum right now. martha: thank you, guys. good afternoon, everybody. i am martha maccallum and afghanistan is spinning out of control, that from the u.n. secretary general speaking moments ago. this is obviously a very fast-moving situation, and it changes literally by the hour with regard to the u.s. embassy and kabul. a lot of questions about what the u.s. position should be there at this point as the taliban threatens to topple the afghan capital next in their relen ....
History, for the sake of the transcript, this broadcast, it is time to hear from the defense secretary through his spokesman. is this something he wanted? a lot of people think this is looking like saigon, martha. i think a more apt analogy is iraq. you don t have to be a history major to know that ten years ago u.s. forces completely withdrew from iraq. the head of the u.s. forces at the time was general lloyd austin who said if the u.s. forces pull out, al qaeda will become isis and metastasize and take over the country, and that s what happened. that is what we are seeing today in afghanistan. martha: one thing is very clear, and that that the taliban is stronger than the afghan military forces that have been trained by u.s. forces and given a lot of weapons, a lot of materials. as you pointed out, over the last 20 years. over $85 billion, martha, and the last 20 years. that was one of the things i asked, i pressed kirby on it. ....
Gang culture is generational in many communities, and oftentimes if there is no father figure, if the family unit is somehow broken, it s not just limited to fathers, its mothers, too. the gangs will supplant the family structure. they will find you when the young person need structure, and they will give the structure they need. because of that, at the gangs become the parent to children and teach them all the wrong values. right now the best program we can focus on in any city, including chicago, is strengthening that family units of the parents have better control over their children, teach them better values, and show them a better path forward. not every single-parent s child becomes a gang banger, but if the parent isn t paying attention, we know the streets will. martha: what is the motivation for the parents to start paying attention, to get involved in their children s lives, when a lot of this is, as you say, generational? that dad was in the gang, that s the way they see t ....
Shameful. again, it is all on president biden. this did not have to happen, and we just have to pick up and decide, what are we going to do now? we have women and girls that are being threatened by the taliban, others that are being killed by the taliban. we know that there are many other violent extremist organizations that are reconstituting in afghanistan as we speak. this is a sincere tragedy for everyone. martha: it s pretty clear. you don t have to be a military strategist to see that, as soon as the announcement was made that we were pulling out, the taliban began to sweep up all the villages. as you say, the everything they ve been doing is basically torturing and mistreating women and children in the town, and then they don t have to have a lot of bloodshed in that town. and everybody backs down because they re terrified, and people start to convert from being afghan military forces to joining forces with the taliban, which we see in many of these instances. you said somethi ....
