get to stay. so these children are used in this scenario. no question, they re in a gang environment and just about all of these unaccompanied minors, 11 years old and 17 years old and the border volunteers, i help the border patrol apprehend hundreds if not thousands the past 12 years, just about all of them are encouraged to join a gang in el salvador and guatemala by the time they re 8 years old. so these kids are street smart and in some cases, border patrol agents told me in the interview process or the interrogation process on these kids, some of them have already committed horrific crimes in their own country including murder. so these kids are not. these children are actually escaping gangs. yes. a picture we re painting of immigrants as criminals that s happened throughout history and is just removed from the fact. in fact, many cases, immigrants,
individual looked, quote, thuggish, and that changed their mind. you had a different interpretation. this was a young man living in south central los angeles and very much a gang-oriented community. he was very much signaling all sorts of gang affiliations. the assumption from the college admission officer that he must be lying to us. he must not really want to get rid of the gang environment he s from. but my interpretation was maybe he s trying to survive, deal with these different worlds simultaneously. he s trying to deal with his friends, his peers, his, you know, cousins, his extended family, all of which are gang afill yalted. that s a survival mechanism. that doesn t mean when he goes to college he wants to be associated in the same way. how do you deal with two different worlds simultaneously? i thought that was a fascinating story and one that makes you question how adults look at some of this stuff. thanks for being here. with your visit here we asked our facebook friend
