Competitive chef Demetrio Zavala beats health scare to return to Delray for kitchen wins with local restaurateur and old friend Gary Rack.

Chef Demetrio Zavala is a bona fide star on The Food Network, appearing a record 17 times on shows such as "Chopped" and "Guy's Grocery Games." Now the Delray Beach-born Zavala is returning to SoFlo to work with bestie Gary Rack in giving a reboot to the menus at both Farmhouse Kitchens as well as Racks Fish House + Oyster Bar.

Rather than hike menu prices in these inflationary times, more South Florida restaurants are sticking customers with fees on bills of fare. Hospitality experts say these surcharges are ways to offset surging costs for food, higher wages in a tight labor market, takeout packaging, overhead and even fuel to transport goods to restaurants.
