Loughton High Road as seen in 1900 could been mistaken as a residential street from the photo above from c1900.
Lower Road inb Loughton dates back several hundred years. Credit Gary Stone Picture above is Lower Road, in Loughton, from c1900. It was the old road into Loughton before the new road was constructed (left of picture below) and later altered in 1774 to lessen its steepness. This was to ease the strain on the horses pulling heavily laden carts up what is now known as Goldings Hill. Credit: Gary Stone The drinking fountain pictured above from c1900 on the corner of Station Road and High Road in Loughton was erected by the Metropolitan Drinking Trough & Fountains Association in 1870. The fountain was hit by a bus on a foggy day in 1934, and rebuilt in timber in 1936. The house in the background - formerly Browns Garage - is now part of a bakery and restaurant.
