A man and woman, who are not related to the schoolboy, have been arrested and the animal has been seized. Officers have described the attack as "horrific".
The attack occurred in Bootle, Merseyside, on Saturday February 10 where the boy, 8, was mauled by the dog while playing outside near Wadham Road.
The boy was taken to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries, where he remains in a serious but stable condition
