BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Montana officials have assigned the lease for Hell Creek State Park to the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians, as the tribe seeks to take over management of the remote, 337-acre (136-hectare) site on Fort Peck Lake.
Among possible changes the Little Shell are planning are an interpretive center, a restaurant, more campsites and other amenities.
Governor Greg Gianforte was in Great Falls to present the the tribe with the first Little Shell Tribal flag to fly at the state capitol in Helena.
“Our members travel a long ways, so when they get here I want them to get everything taken care of,” Molly Wendland, the tribe’s health director, said.
