In 1943, shortly after Italy surrendered to the Allies, Garda Inspector Stefan Gillespie, on a delicate diplomatic mission to Rome for the Irish government, takes a train from the chaos of the German-occupied Eternal City to the Reich itself. Late at night in an almost deserted station in neutral Switzerland while waiting for his connection, he sees something he is not supposed to see, a swastika-emblazoned German train that shouldn’t be there. The train is packed with a desperate human cargo, and when he sees an Italian prisoner escape, Gillespie is beaten within an inch of his life by SS guards who also shouldn’t be there under the rules of war. ....
