Man gets 7 yrs in jail for buying stolen cellphones

The court of additional session judge Pranav Dave convicted Abu Amir Kaskiwala (26), a resident of Chowk Bazaar, under Section 413 (habitual dealing with stolen property) of the IPC. He also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on Dave. Hearing in the case had concluded on August 1, 2023.

Five acquitted in 2003 explosives case | Surat News


Surat: A local court on Monday acquitted five persons accused in a March 2003 case registered under the various sections of Explosive Substance Act. The court of 11th additional sessions judge acquitted Selvaraj alias Selu Pyappan Cavander, Shanmuga Sundaram Srinivasan Kaundar, Ramesh Hiralal Kapadiya, Rushabh Rajmal Shah and Karansinh Pratapsinh Solanki for lack of evidence.
Of the two other accused in the case registered in March 2003 — Sandip and Ganesh Solanki — had died during the course of the trial. One other accused Vijayan alias Vijay Toraiswami Adidravidar could not be traced by the investigating agency. According to case details, a complaint was lodged by Jitendra Khumansinh Rao, police sub-inspector with crime branch on March 28, 2003 after the crime branch team raided an apartment on Ghod Dod Road. Rao further stated they had recovered explosives from an apartment in Ajit Park society behind Vrundavan Park on Ghod Dod Road. Some of the accused were nabbed from the spot. During the raid, cops had recovered a timer bomb, one fuse wire stick bomb, one bomb without a timer, six electronics detonators, 13 non-electronic detonators, eight explosive sticks, three fuse wire coils and one anaesthesia bottle.

Milk parlour gutted in midnight inferno | Surat News


Surat: A dairy parlour in the posh locality of Adarsh Society in Athwalines was gutted in fire that broke out on Friday midnight. Fire officials said that incident happened at around 11.40 pm at the Jalaram Dairy located near SMC’s Athwa zone office.
Locals noticed smoke coming out of the shop and alerted the owner and the fire department. Firemen from Majura Gate and Man Darwaja stations were pressed into service.
“After breaking the shutters, we encountered a lot of smoke. But we managed to douse the blaze in half-an-hour,” said Maruti Sonwane, station officer. “A short-circuit might have started the fire. The furniture and electronic appliances were damaged due to the fire,” said Sonwane.

Art show for budding artists | Surat News


SURAT: Hissa Art, an initiative to promote budding artists, has organized a two-day art show themed ‘Enduring Minds’ that will display the work of young artists from the city.
It will showcase the works of young aspiring artists from the city. The show will be held at Noopur Nritya Academy on Ghod Dod Road.
Drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations based on the theme will be displayed. “The aim of this event is to support the art industry, which has been hit had by the global pandemic. It is an attempt to provide a platform to artists to look forward amid uncertainties,” said Khushboo Agarwal, founder of Hissa.
