Sri Lankan foreign minister GL Peiris, who is on a visit to India, has said that Sri Lanka will never allow any part of its territory to be used in any way against the well-being of India. He also assured that there is no chance of Sri Lanka falling in a debt trap, or of not being able to service its loans taken from China. India has been concerned about China’s activities in Sri Lanka, particularly in the northern areas where the Chinese embassy has been reaching out to local communities, and the alleged Lankan pivot to Beijing under the Rajapaksas.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has conveyed to his Sri Lankan counterpart GL Peiris that Colombo's interests are best served by ensuring equality, justice and respect for the Tamil people within a united Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister GL Peiris is scheduled to visit India from Sunday on a three-day visit to strengthen bilateral ties including in areas of trade and connectivity.
