CDC 'Committed' to US Cruise Industry Resuming Operations by Mid-Summer – NECN


Earlier this month, the state of Florida filed a lawsuit against the federal government demanding that cruise ships be allowed to start sailing immediately.
In announcing the lawsuit, which Alaska has since joined, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the no-sail order is outdated and hurts the state as the industry generates billions for the economy and employs tens of thousands of Floridians.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announces that Florida is suing the federal government and the CDC to allow cruises to reopen.
The CDC on April 2 had issued new guidelines for companies on how to respond in the event of COVID-19 cases but has so far not lifted its no-sail order. ....

U.S. cruise ships could resume sailing this summer after being suspended for more than a year during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
Passengers will once again be able to cruise by mid-July if operators can show that 98% of crew members and 95% of passengers are fully vaccinated, among other guidelines, according to a letter sent to cruise industry insiders and shared with USA Today.

Reports: CDC may allow cruises to resume in mid-summer
Ready to set sail? CDC said that cruising could resume in mid-summer in the U.S., according to USA TODAY.
Spokesperson Caitlin Shockey told the news outlet that cruises could begin passenger voyages from the U.S. as early as mid-July depending on cruise lines’ pace and their ability to follow the CDC’s Framework for Conditional Sailing Order.
“CDC looks forward to continued engagement with the industry and urges cruise lines to submit Phase 2A port agreements as soon as possible to maintain the timeline of passenger voyages by mid-July,” Shockey said. ....

Over a year after issuing a No Sail order in the U.S. for the cruise industry, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering lifting the ban.
In a letter to the cruise industry sent late Wednesday that was obtained by USA Today, the agency said sailing could restart in U.S. waters by mid-summer.
The letter from Aimee Treffiletti, head of the CDC’s Maritime Unit within the Global Mitigation Task Force for COVID-19, read, in part: “We acknowledge that cruising will never be a zero-risk activity and that the goal of the CSO’s phased approach is to resume passenger operations in a way that mitigates the risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard cruise ships and across port communities.” ....
