By Levinus Nwabughiogu-Abuja House of Representatives has said it was not favourably disposed to the bid by the Federal Government to purchase new scanners for the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS when the 22 old ones procured at the cost $120 million were lying fallow. The House said it would rather prefer that the old ones be repaired and put to use instead spending another taxpayers money. Members of the House Committee on Customs and Excise expressed the position at a public hearing, Monday, on the lack of transparency on the transfer of technical know-how from Cotecna Destination Inspection Limited, Societe Generale De Surveillance, to Nigeria Customs Service and Global Scan Systems which led to the collapse of multimillion dollar scanners at Nigeria’s Ports and Border Stations. ....
Punch Newspapers Sections Published 25 May 2021 The House of Representatives’ Committee on Customs and Excise, on Monday, grilled top officials of the Federal Government over the abandonment of 22 cargo scanners that cost taxpayers $120m at the seaports, airports and land borders. The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, while declaring the hearing open, noted that the investigation was to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sudden failure of scanners after the private partners handed over the facilities to Nigerian government. Gbajabiamila, who was represented by Chairman of the Committee on House Services, Mr Olawale Raji, recalled that in 2006, Nigeria acquired the scanners and retained the service providers on Build, Own, Operate and Transfer terms. ....
We have no laboratory to sample products, Customs boss tells Senate On By Henry Umoru THE Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Colonel Hameed Ali (retd), has told the Senate that the service does not have a single laboratory to carry out sample tests of products. Disclosing this when he appeared before the Senator Francis Alimikhena (APC, Edo North)-led Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, the comptroller general, who was represented by the Acting Comptroller (Tariff) Suleiman Chiroma, said that with the absence of laboratory to effectively carry out its jobs, the Customs, at different times, hired the services of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON; the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and the University of Lagos. ....

The call was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion moved by a member, Leke Abejide, at the plenary on Thursday. The motion was titled ‘Need to investigate the lack of transparency in the transfer of technical know-how from Cotecna Destination Inspection Limited to Global Scan Systems Limited’. Moving the motion, Abejide said the House Committee on Customs and Excise recently embarked on a week-long oversight visit to Zone A Command of the Nigeria Customs Service to ascertain the level of revenue generation and the challenges. ....
