bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS An Elkins City Council member’s suggestion that the city announce municipal election results this evening at the Phil Gainer Community Center was rejected Monday by City Clerk Jessica Sutton. On Friday, the city announced that, due to COVID-19 concerns, the public and the candidates on the ballot will not be allowed in City Hall after the polls close this evening. Only election officials and the press will be permitted inside City Hall tonight. On Monday, Third Ward Councilman Chris Lowther told The Inter-Mountain he suggested in an email to Sutton on Sunday evening that the city announce the election results at the Phil Gainer Community Center after polls close on Election Night, instead of having the activity at City Hall. ....
Sutton ELKINS –Elkins City Clerk Jessica Sutton declined to comment Friday on whether she would seek the position of city manager if voters approve a city charter change in Tuesday’s election that would allow for the creation of a city manager post. Elkins businessman Mark Doak has been running advertisements in The Inter-Mountain in recent weeks in support of the proposed charter change, and his letter to the editor saying Elkins needs a city manager ran in the Feb. 20 edition of The Inter-Mountain. During an Elkins City Council meeting in September, Doak suggested that Sutton would be the best choice to fill the city manager position. ....
