In its heyday. Built in 1888/9 by settlers of the Takaka Valley, the Golden Bay Grandstand is one of the last barrel vaulted grandstands left in the country.
OPINION: I appreciate that councils can operate on a near-geological time scale of slowness. Nothing gets done quickly or that efficiently, often way too expensively too. I’m not talking about the Waimea Dam debacle here either, but the historic Golden Bay Grandstand. A little over three years ago, Tasman District Council caved into strong people pressure and abandoned their last-minute plans to demolish the 1898/9-built structure, one of the last pioneer-built barrel vaulted roofed grandstands left in the country.
