Google Groups is about to drop support for posting to or browsing Usenet.
Usenet is a very old (pre-World Wide Web) networking system that I’ve never actually used, but this explanation on Reddit helped me better understand how it works. “Much of the content being disseminated via Usenet today is binary (non-text) file sharing, which Google Groups does not support, as well as spam,” Google writes in a support document. The company also says “legitimate activity” in Usenet groups has gone down because of social media and modern-day web forums. Google Groups’ support for Usenet will end on February 22nd, 2024.
