When asked what he considered important characteristics to be a successful entrepreneur, Scot Wingo of ChannelAdvisor, Get Spiffy and Tweener Fund, offers a one word answer: “grit”. It takes him some time to figure out if they have this trait. Entrepreneurship is hard, especially determining product market fit. You must be foolishly optimistic and stubborn, like Don Quixote, willing to run through a wall. Finally on the 90th time - you punch through. You are so passionate and crazed about what you want to do, you can make it through the hard times.

Sixteen years ago, on the first day of teaching Entrepreneurial Marketing at UNC Kenan Flagler, I asked my MBA students what they were hoping to learn from my class. One woman raised her hand and said “I would like to learn from your failures.” Let's talk about failing - and why we shouldn't be afraid to fail.

I was fascinated to learn that young people are now showing an interest in going back in time. Happy with my findings, I ordered my niece several disposable cameras in hopes that they would help her delight in capturing future college memories. Why? I believe this trend can help take away anxiety and body-image issues and societal pressures of teenagers and rather capture pictures for her to remember, instead of painting an ideal picture for everyone on the internet.
