The Capital Region Development Authority — the quasi-public agency responsible for helping finance major downtown Hartford apartment projects — has a full plate on its hands. It recently unveiled a $107.2-million plan to renovate the aging XL Center and is negotiating with Los Angeles-based sports and live entertainment company Oak View Group to help fund the much-needed investment as part of a public-private partnership.

Welcome to our 2023 Book of Lists publication, a resource guide for Greater Hartford’s business community. As we head into a new year, much uncertainty exists around the state and U.S. economies. Some economists and business leaders are raising concerns about a recession. Others are more optimistic about the year ahead in terms of how the economy will perform.  That makes HBJ’s Book of Lists all the more relevant as it helps inform the region’s business, civic and nonprofit leaders as they plan and strategize for 2023.

Plains, trains, buses and waterways are all used as transportation modes, but they are also increasingly seen and being leveraged as economic development tools.  The state has invested billions of dollars over the years in its rail and bus lines and airports and waterways, hoping to spur economic development.  Already there are many development projects happening around those various transportation modes. Even more investment is expected in the years ahead with the influx of federal dollars from President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Stefanowksi is back this fall for a rematch with Gov. Ned Lamont. Unsurprisingly, while his Democratic opponent paints an upbeat picture of the state’s economy and business climate, Stefanowksi is much more critical of Lamont’s economic track record.
