The world's biggest rice exporter India has banned some overseas sales of the grain "with immediate effect", the government said, in a move that could drive international prices even higher.
India, the world's largest rice exporter, has banned the export of non-basmati white rice with immediate effect. The ban is intended to "ensure" "adequate" supply for Indian consumers and "mitigate price increases in the domestic market" The move could "risk exacerbating food insecurity in countries heavily dependent on rice imports," Gro Intelligence warned. African countries, Turkey, Syria and Pakistan are expected to suffer from the ban, as they are already facing high food price inflation.

India accounted for 40% of the world’s total rice shipments in 2022 and it is a key supplier of the grain to several countries in Africa and South Asia.
