High Point ; YWCA, Kiwanis Club 'garden tower'

The YWCA High Point and the Kiwanis Club have partnered on an innovative new project, “garden tower,” that will help youth overcome food insecurity. This new tool will allow children to see growth in their personal lives as well as in their new indoor garden. An aeroponic garden tower was installed at the facility last week, allowing the children of the YWCA to grow their own food year-round. This tower was the first of twelve that will be distributed across the community.Seeds are beginning to sprout in just under two weeks with the assistance of modern technology. The tower is equipped with a timer that keeps track of the growing cycle, a light and a self-watering system. The children participate by checking the pH of the water, adding minerals and observing.President of the Kiwanis Club of High Point, Latoya Bullock, hopes that this tower provides children with a little bit of fun, while also shedding light on childhood poverty in the area.“We wanted to help out with food insecurity because, here in High Point and Guilford County, childhood poverty is 25%. So, we wanted to make sure our kids had a way to actively get food, fresh food, good food for them, during the pandemic. This is one way that we can do it, with the tower gardens,” Bullock said. The garden tower is made possible by the Guilford County Cares Grant, which helps to assist businesses with the impact of COVID-19.
