MORE than a third of employers claiming furlough payments for workers laid off due to the pandemic could be doing so fraudulently, MPs warned today. Parliament’s public accounts committee said that the “opportunistic fraud” could be costing the taxpayer billions of pounds. It said between 7 and 34 per cent of companies could be claiming and pocketing furlough cash in the names of employees who are still working.
